The Fredericksburg Police Department announced that 21-year-old Christian Kinsella was struck by a train shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7 on the tracks in the area of Prince Edward Street and Frederick Street.
According to the department, patrol officers and detectives secured the scene, and shortly before 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the medical examiner arrived at the scene to begin its investigation.
Initially, the VRE was forced to cancel trains due to "an incident concerning a trespasser."
The medical examiner gave the “go-ahead” to resume train travel following the investigation into the fatal strike, though VRE train traffic was severely impacted following the strike.
It is unclear what caused Kinsella to be on the tracks at the time he was struck by the train. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
